Danny Brown - XXX
Detroit MC Danny Brown drops a free album on Fool’s Gold Records. If you haven’t heard Danny before be prepared for a barrage of diverse flows and abusive lyrics over varied production styles. When I say ‘abusive’ I’m not over-reacting - with rhymes like “you’re p_ssy ain’t shit until you’ve had some Danny in it” this is definitely one album I will not be playing to my wife.
Saying that, you can’t help but connect with Danny due to the emotion that he conveys in his delivery, something that a lot of MCs often lack, and also with subject matter of his tracks like predicting his death will be in the same vein as many other great artists or that fact that he inherits his penchant for substance abuse from his family. I think what I like most about Danny is that he doesn’t follow the ‘hip hop appearance manual’, many fans were actually quite dismayed by his hair-cut earlier this year which demonstrated just how much the hip hop scene needs to be shaken up, if it is to keep evolving.
